Dice mi padre que el conocimiento no ocupa espacio, que lo que bien se aprende no se olvida y que la constancia de la cachimba es la que tumba la quijada; esas frases cubanas como “La Guantanamera” son parte esencial de mi filosofía de vida. Incorporar nuevos saberes u oficios sin importar a que rama pertenezcan es uno de mis placeres y aunque a veces viene aparejado de frustraciones y dolores de cabeza, la satisfacción que nos regalan las metas cumplidas y los objetivos logrados, bien valen la pena.

My father says that knowledge doesn't take up space, that what is well learned is not forgotten and that the constancy of the hookah is what knocks down the jaw. Those Cuban phrases like “La Guantanamera” are an essential part of my life's philosophy. the incorporation of new knowledge or crafts no matter what branch they belong to is one of my pleasures, although sometimes it comes with frustrations and headaches, the satisfaction that goals met and objectives achieved give us is well worth it.

Hoy quiero ilustrarles uno de esos oficios que me cautivaron: La Orfebrería, desde ahora aclaro que no domino este arte, solo tuve la oportunidad de convivir durante dos años con un grupo de estos artistas que me regalaron sus tiempo y sus mieles, además de permitirme el atrevimiento de jugar con sus herramientas y aprender a golpe de observación, prueba y error las bases de su oficio, mientras ellos creaban verdaderas obras de arte.

Today I want to illustrate one of those crafts that captivated me: The Goldsmithing's craft, from now on I clarify that I do not dominate this art, I only had the opportunity to live for two years with a group of these artists who gave me their time, in addition to allowing me the daring to play with their tools and learn their craft's basics through observation, trial and error, while they created true art's pieces.

Pauyet, grupo de orfebres cubanos

El Grupo de Orfebres Pauyet, es reconocido en Cuba y también fuera de sus fronteras por la excelencia y originalidad de su obra. Se basan fundamentalmente en la utilización de elementos antiguos de cubertería de alpaca para dar forma a piezas de joyería y esculturas de pequeño y mediano formato de disímiles temáticas.

The excellence and originality of the art's pieces made by the Goldsmiths Group Pauyet, is recognized in Cuba and also outside its borders. They are fundamentally based on the use of old alpaca cutlery elements to shape jewelry's pieces and small and medium-sized sculptures of dissimilar themes.

Vivir desde dentro el proceso creativo de estos artistas ha sido una de las experiencias más gratificantes que me ha tocado vivir. Más allá de las técnicas y herramientas necesarias, se necesita un don especial para ver una rosa donde otros ven chucharas viejas, o para convertir un amasijo de tenedores en la ondulante crin de un caballo salvaje.

Experiencing the creative process of these artists from inside has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. Beyond the necessary techniques and tools, it takes a special gift to see a rose where others see old spoons, or to turn a forks's jumble into a wild horse 's billowing mane.

He visto como el rostro de “El Quijote” se abría paso entre las páginas de un libro fruto de mi imaginación y mi empeño para dar forma a una bandeja antigua y un puñado de cucharas y tenedores.

I have seen how the face of "Don Quixote" made its way between the pages of a book, as result of my imagination and my efforts to shape an old tray and a handful of spoons and forks.

Aunque yo sencillamente estaba allí para asistirles en temas de software y diseño, me acogieron como uno más del grupo y aquel gesto me abrió las puertas a un mundo realmente fascinante. Es increíble cómo en el lugar menos insospechado encontramos un caudal de conocimientos infinitos.

Although I was simply there to assist them with software and design issues, they welcomed me as part of the group and that gesture opened the doors of a truly fascinating world for me. It is incredible how in the least unexpected place we find a wealth of infinite knowledge.

Fue allí donde por vez primera conocí los secretos del Hombre de Vitruvio, aquel famoso dibujo de Leonardo da Vinci, que ilustra las proporciones ideales del cuerpo humano; y es que para dar forma a una figura humanoide, los artistas se toman muy en serio aquello de las proporciones y la anatomía humana, ya luego juegan con ellas a su antojo. De igual forma aprendí sobre la anatomía de los animales, me divertí mucho cuando uno de ellos tan enfrascado en su proceso creativo no se dio cuenta de lo desproporcionada que estaba la cabeza de un caballo y fue entonces donde fui consciente de la resiliencia del arte, aquel pequeño caballo cabezón relinchó, se irguió con toda su potencia sobre sus patas delanteras y se convirtió en mi escultura preferida, a pesar de la dura competencia.

It was there that for the first time I learned the secrets of the Vitruvian Man, that famous drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, which illustrates the ideal proportions of the human body; and it is that to give shape to a humanoid figure, the artists take very seriously that of the proportions and the human anatomy, and then they play with them at will. In the same way, I learned about the anatomy of animals, I had a lot of fun when one of them, so engrossed in his creative process, didn't realize how disproportionate a horse's head was, and it was then that I became aware of the art's resilience, that big-headed little horse neighed, reared up with all his might on his front legs, and became my favorite sculpture, despite hard competition.

Se que les dije que ilustraría el oficio de la orfebrería, pero no soy orfebre… y como también dice mi papá: zapatero a su zapato, en este caso: Orfebre a su Obra. Por tanto, sencillamente me limité a describir a grandes rasgos el privilegio de pode decirle Amigos, a los Verdaderos Orfebres.

I know I told you that I would teach you about the goldsmithing's craft, but I am not a goldsmith... and as my dad also says: shoemaker to his shoe, in this case: Goldsmith to his Work . Therefore, I simply limited myself to describing in broad strokes the privilege of being able to call My Friends, to the True Goldsmiths.
